Faryal Velmi

As a writer, Faryal’s inspiration comes from the rich multicultural tapestry of British life and campaigns for social justice. She aspires for her work to speak with a powerful and original voice, which can discover humour in even the darkest of places.

Faryal was part of the writers’ room that produced season two and three of Ackley Bridge (The Forge/Channel 4), and she co-wrote episodes in both. Faryal also worked on the writing and development of two YA shows, We Never Sleep and Chemistry, with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s production company, Stolen Pictures.

Her 2011 short film What You Looking At?, which she wrote and directed, was shown at 20 film festivals around the world. It was supported by Film London and distributed by Peccadillo Pictures.

Faryal is currently in the writers’ room for Tanya Saracho’s new show Lovesong (NBC Universal/Ojala/ Starz), and has been developing a 90-minute semi-autobiographical drama commission for the BBC, Take Me Home, which is centred on a young mother trying to survive the housing crisis in London. She is also developing other film and television projects, including a female-led legal drama with Wild Mercury, and a biopic of Khadijah Mellah, the first hijab-wearing jockey in competitive British horse racing, with Fable Pictures.
