Nicôle Lecky | Writer/Executive Producer/Performer

Singing, dancing, acting, telling stories, creating worlds – these are activities most children enjoy. It’s just not every kid who turns all of those things into a career. That’s what east Londoner Nicôle Lecky did, first signing on to BBC Three’s writing course E20, then attending Mountview Academy to do an acting degree, which led to roles on such shows as Sense8 (2015), Death in Paradise (2019) and Bloods (2021). But the desire to create something of her own prompted Nicôle to write Superhoe, a solo play that she then adapted into a six-part Mood (2022) for BBC Three. Mood’s breathtaking mix of drama, comedy and song and dance saw Nicole write, act in the lead, sing her own songs and executive produce the show.

In her own words:

“There’s not a single person in my family who is in the arts. But I loved movies as a kid and read a lot, so maybe I just wanted to create my own stories... I also loved Barbie and would create really elaborate plots for them. I’d spend hours with them, real soap opera territory. I had a very active imagination...

“I love the process of writing. It’s your own little precious thing before anybody else gets their hands on it. When I’m writing, I’m burrowing in my brain and want to be left alone. But, when I’m ready to share it, I’m excited for everyone to read it...

“I’d never executive produced anything before, let alone my own show, so that’s the newest string to my bow and I loved it. I’d definitely like to develop that. I’d also like to direct. The process of shooting Mood and being in the edit every day, really gave me the directing bug...

“I’m excited to meet some writer-directors, because I don’t know too many. There are lots of female creatives who inspire and impress me. Just being able to check in with BAFTA is a great thing... I don’t know anyone who’s done BAFTA Breakthrough, so I don’t really know what to expect but I’m ready to jump in.”
