The biggest breakthrough has been accepting my face. The show turned out to be where I would have to share myself in the ‘face’ of learned beliefs that were clouding my artistry and my life. The beliefs that only colonial beauty was real beauty; only models could be actresses, it was shameful to be from a poor Indian village, good girls didn’t have sex, and brown girls should only live in oppression. If I was going to be big in the world and encourage those who looked like or related to me, I would have to kill all these ancestral traumas. I would have to lead by example.

Amrit speaks passionately about her breakthrough moment. It wasn’t a specific role or project, but rather a revelation in an acting studio class she’s been taking for six years. A month into this revelation, Amrit booked her first lead in an HBO series The Sex Lives of College Girls (2022).  Amrit’s performance was unanimously recognized by critics. On The Sex Lives of College Girls, she plays a sex-positive, aspiring comedian.

Amrit feels a responsibility in using her platform to truthfully represent, empower, and humanize the South Asian experience.

Story-telling has the power to heal. I will continue to grow, train, and use this art form to help those out there without a voice or platform I’ve begun to so fortunately have.
