BLUE PETER PRESENTER BARNEY HARWOOD TO HOST AWARDS*
PEPPA PIG RECEIVES ITS TENTH NOMINATION*
VOTING FOR BAFTA KIDS’ VOTE OPENS TODAY – JLS CONFIRMED TO PRESENT AWARD*

The Awards will be hosted for the second year running by Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood, who previously won in the Presenter category in 2007 for Smile. The Awards celebrate the very best in children’s media including television, film, video games and online.

Some of the most notable nominees this year include Peppa Pig, which receives its tenth nomination to date; Horrible Histories, which receives three nominations; and The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is nominated for a fourth consecutive year. Continuing Harry Potter’s phenomenal success, both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 have been nominated in the Feature Film category alongside Kung Fu Panda 2 and Disney hit, Tangled.

Jamie Oliver features for the first time at the Children’s BAFTAs with his hit Channel 4 show Jamie’s Dream School, which has been nominated in the Learning–Secondary category. The seven-part television documentary devised and hosted by the celebrity chef aimed to encourage 20 young people who left school with few qualifications to join Jamie’s Dream School; the programme also resulted in participants giving advice to the Education Select Committee.

Confirming its place as one of the most popular pre-school children’s shows, Peppa Pig receives two more British Academy Children’s Award nominations and is challenged in the Pre-School Animation category by Little Princess and newcomers Rastamouse and Octonauts.

The Sarah Jane Adventures has been nominated in both the Writer and Drama categories. The nominations are a fitting tribute to Elisabeth Sladen, who played the role of Sarah Jane Smith since 1973 in both Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Another programme competing in the Writer category is Horrible Histories, which is also shortlisted in the Performer and Comedy categories. This follows its three BAFTA wins at last year’s Awards.

Justin Fletcher is nominated again for Something Special in the Presenter category, having previously won in 2010 and 2008. Also nominated is Helen Skelton, Barney Harwood’s Blue Peter co-presenter, for Girl on Wire, a special Comic Relief documentary charting Helen’s attempt to high-wire walk between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station in support of Red Nose Day 2011. Another nominee used to dangerous pursuits is Steve Backshall, presenter of Deadly 60 and Kemi Majeks is nominated for hosting Milkshake, Five’s pre-school strand.

The British Academy Children’s Awards represent all aspects of children’s entertainment: Animation, Channel of the Year, Comedy, Drama, Entertainment, Factual, Feature Film, Independent Production Company, Interactive, International, Learning–Primary, Learning–Secondary, Performer, Pre-school Animation, Pre-school Live Action, Presenter, Short Form, Video Game and Writer.

BAFTA Young Game Designers in association with Electronic Arts and supported by NESTA returns this year after a successful debut in 2010. Hundreds of young people (aged 11-16) have teamed up to create their own video game concept, hoping to win an award, work experience with EA and the opportunity to have their idea developed into a game prototype by Abertay University. The winners of BAFTA Young Game Designers 2011 will be announced at the British Academy Children’s Awards.

In addition, this year’s Awards celebrates the BAFTA Kids’ Vote powered by Yahoo, in which children aged between 7 and 14 years have their say across a whole range of entertainment media in a nationwide poll to choose their favourite film, television programme, website and video game. The shortlist for voting is incredibly strong, with films from three major franchises leading the way: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader are all going head-to-head in the Feature Film category. The Sarah Jane Adventures is nominated in the Television category for the third year running, in competition with Tracy Beaker Returns, which also featured in last year’s Top 10.

Voting for the BAFTA Kids’ Vote powered by Yahoo, opens today (24 October 2011) and closes at 18.00 on Friday 25 November 2011. Children can cast their votes at www.baftakidsvote.org. Winners of each category will this year be presented their Award by BAFTA’s very special guests, JLS.
