A British author and illustrator, whose writing output for the screen was limited but memorable. He was nominated for a BAFTA for Graphics, with director Dianne Jackson, for what is now staple Christmas viewing, The Snowman (1982), with the animated film winning the Children’s Programme – Entertainment/Drama category. Other screen adaptations of Briggs’ work included the seminal When the Wind Blows (1986), Father Christmas (1991), The Bear (1998), Ivor the Invisible (2001), Fungus the Bogeyman (2004) and Ethel & Ernest (2016). He was appointed CBE in 2017.
