A British director, producer and screenwriter who directed the BAFTA-winning Educating Rita (1983), Gilbert also helmed the three Bond movies You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. He received further BAFTA nominations for Reach for the Sky (1956), Alfie (1966) and Shirley Valentine (1989), and was honoured with the Michael Balcon award in 1990.
