A British director and writer who worked predominantly in theatre, Carlton was best known for the Olivier-winning Return to the Forbidden Planet. He directed 40 episodes of Brookside (1984-1987) as well as its spin-off Damon and Debbie (1987), and also worked on Emmerdale (1989) and Streetwise (1989).
