Tom Hawkins is awarded the BAFTA Tinopolis Scholarship to support his ongoing studies in MA Broadcast Journalism at Cardiff University. With his family roots in Wales and a grandfather born in Cardiff, he chose the prestigious journalism school at Cardiff University for his undergraduate degree, becoming the first in his family to attend university.

From a young age, Tom has been passionate about sports, but he first discovered his love for broadcasting while volunteering at North Cotswold Community Radio. There, he produced and presented his own show, realizing that informing audiences through his reporting brought him a profound sense of purpose. During his time at university, he took on multiple leadership roles within student media and freelanced with BBC Wales Sport, where he had the exciting opportunity to work during the Six Nations. Since then, he has gained invaluable experience at renowned organizations like talkSPORT and Whisper TV, learning from some of the best broadcasters in the industry. His proudest moment came when he won the Bronze Award at the 2022 Student Radio Awards at the O2 in London for his live commentary of the Welsh Varsity.

Tom has a deep admiration for the spirit and sacrifice of elite-level athletes, and he is particularly fascinated by human interest stories that reveal what makes individuals unique. Challenging perceptions and uncovering the strength of the human spirit will always be at the heart of his work. He aims to provide others with the space to express their inner drive and explore deeper personal meanings and values. Ultimately, he hopes to hone his creative voice and enhance his storytelling abilities.
