The 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards: Portraits
Georgie Yukiko Donovan is a British-Japanese filmmaker with a flair for telling human stories that explore the intersections of human interest and socio-political issues, captured with sweeping cinematics and intimate portraits. Georgie has directed an award-winning body of work across TV, films and podcasts for such outlets as Netflix, Channel News Asia and the BBC.
Her recent credits include producer-director of The Negotiators series for Channel News Asia (CNA), which was nominated for Best Episodic Series at the 2024 IDFA Awards; unit director for the Netflix series Heart of Invictus (both 2023), under Oscar-winning and BAFTA-nominated duo producer Joanna Natasegara and director Orlando von Einsiedel; and unit director for the BFI/Doc Society-funded sports documentary The Gay Games (due in 2025).
In 2023, Georgie was selected for Film London’s Breaking Glass Ceiling programme, where she was mentored by BAFTA and Emmy-winning filmmaker James Rogan (Rogan Productions). She also received the inaugural Frame Focus Fund from WDM Entertainment. Most recently, she was selected for the Ones to Watch development programme by the TV Foundation and was named a future talent as a 2024 Breakthrough Leader by the TV Collective.
As her work to date reveals, Georgie has a clear flair for telling human stories, with her passion for bridging intersections and recentring marginalised voices into their own stories – especially within the East Asian community – unquestionably shining through. This is focused through her work as director of Rising Waves, an organisation dedicated to amplifying British East and Southeast Asian voices across the arts and media industries.
