Ronald Smedley

Producer, Writer, Director
22 June 1928 to 5 May 2021

A three-time BAFTA recipient, Ronald Smedley was one of British television’s great producers. His first win (shared with Michael Simpson) was for an episode of Scene, entitled ‘Terry’, a series he produced and edited for 16 years (1968-1984). He would win again for Heil Caesar in 1974, a three-part miniseries that he also directed. He was presented with a Special Award in 2002, for outstanding creative contribution to children’s programming - notably his work on seminal children’s show Grange Hill, which he produced from 1985-89 - and specifically educational programming.
