A British actor, who was perhaps better known for his theatre work even though he notched up more than 100 screen credits over a 60-year career, often playing officious types. Among his credits were the films Privilege (1967), The Stud (1978), Quadrophenia (1979) and Darkest Hour (2017) as well as television series The Glittering Prizes (1976), Wings (1977-1978), Sapphire & Steel (1978), The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Fairly Secret Army (1986), First Among Equals (1986), Game, Set and Match (1988), The Falklands Play (2002) and Judge John Deed (2003-2007).
