An American novelist who penned mainly American historical novels, Doctorow’s works were adapted for the screen for Welcome to Hard Times (1967), Ragtime (1981), Billy Bathgate (1991) and Jolene (2008). He wrote the screenplay and produced Sidney Lumet’s Daniel (1983), based on one of his novels.
