A director whose work pre-dated the French New Wave, Delannoy made his name with such films as Pontcarral, Colonel D’Empire (1942) and L’Eternel Retour (1943). As cinematic fashions changed he enjoyed success with Obsession (1954), Notre Dame De Paris (1956), Maigret Tend Un Piége (1958) and Les Amitiés Particulieres (1964).
