(He/Him)

Nathaniel’s breakthrough project is the TV series Mr Loverman.

You can’t predict the twists and turns of life, as writer Nathaniel can attest. He was on course to become a professional footballer, having signed to Crystal Palace at the age of eight, before injury ended his career early. A degree in Sports Science at Exeter University followed, with the aim of becoming a sports psychologist. While there, he became fascinated with sociology, focusing on the trauma suffered by sportspeople after injury, something he was intimately familiar with. His lecturer first suggested Nathaniel should consider a career in writing, whereupon he began reading film and TV scripts.

He graduated from the NFTS with an MA in Screenwriting (where he was a David Lean scholar), also adding BBC Drama Writers and Channel 4 Screenwriting courses to his achievements. Nathaniel’s credits include Tin Star (2017-2020) and Noughts + Crosses (2020), with his sensitive eight-part adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s celebrated novel Mr Loverman (2024) earning him a BAFTA Breakthrough spot. Nathaniel has several projects in various stages of development and recently adapted Neil LaBute’s play This is How it Goes for its director and star, Idris Elba.

In their own words…

“I always want to learn, that’s very important to me as part of the craft and developing as a writer. Mr Loverman allowed me to do that, especially as I was also an associate producer on it… Speaking to industry professionals, who have been there and done that, through BAFTA Breakthrough, will be great. Everyone’s journey is different, but to have a bit of their time and learn some of their wisdom will be really useful.”
