Acting Head of Film – fixed term maternity cover (up to 14 months)

BAFTA is the leading UK organisation promoting and rewarding excellence in the art forms of the moving image which today encompasses film, television and video games.
The Awards Department at BAFTA produces five ceremonies per year – Film, Television, Television Craft, Children’s and Games. This department now requires a highly competent and experienced individual to provide maternity cover for the Head of Film, a key role within the Awards Department.
The ideal candidate will hold/have held a senior role within the film industry, preferably in the distribution sector, will have significant, proven experience of managing and executing complex administrative projects, will have good contacts within the UK film industry and experience of working closely with corporate partners and external PR/marketing agencies.
Initially, the successful candidate will work with the Head of Film in a supporting role, before the maternity cover begins in December. The Acting Head of Film will play a crucial role in the delivery of the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2014, working closely with BAFTA’s CEO Amanda Berry, and will be the main liaison point for film-related policy and discussions at the Academy.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the Film Awards online voting process, including communication with the membership, collating and processing online entry forms, creating voting database and listings, managing the voting website and voting support, processing results and working with the Academy’s scrutineers
- Manage Film Awards aspects of BAFTA’s entry and viewing websites, including responding to entrants’ queries and liaison with software company
- Oversee management of Outstanding Debut Award jury process: research and verify eligibility of films, administer jury, arrange screeners/screenings
- Work on the Film Awards schedules, rules and entry forms to update, amend and publish each year
- Main point of contact for film distributors, responding to all questions on the Film Awards rules and entry
- Write press releases and deal with press, working closely with BAFTA’s PR company
Nominee liaison: contacting and inviting nominees, handling all queries, dealing with distributors, agents and publicists
- Work closely with the Film Awards production company on elements of the ceremony and television broadcast
- Work closely with the title sponsor on all elements of their involvement with the awards, in collaboration with the Partnerships Department, including: reviewing and signing off print work, press releases and other materials; overseeing management of the EE Rising Star Award jury process
- Coordinate strategy for marketing, publicity and press campaigns in the run up to the ceremony, in liaison with in-house production and communications team, external PR company and title sponsor
- Manage the administration of the Academy’s Film Committee and act as the point of contact for the Chair and committee members. Conduct research, prepare papers and minute the monthly committee meetings
- Work closely with production team on planning additional content surrounding the awards, including liaison with the BBC and other stakeholders
- Work with Head of Television and Games to manage the Awards Department, sharing responsibility for cross-awards policies, procedures and planning
Other responsibilities
- Oversee the management of the Short Film and Short Animation Awards, from making amendments to the rules through to the jury process
- Ensure that the film sections of the BAFTA website are kept up to date
- Work with the membership department on membership applications, intake and on correspondence with members during and after the voting period
- Work on other awards ceremonies, as required
Key skills required
- Excellent knowledge and experience of the film industry
- Strong people skills and ability to communicate with people at all levels with diplomacy and professionalism
- Well organised with an ability to multi-task
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Self-motivated but able to work in a team
- Calm under extreme pressure
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to process large amounts of sensitive data quickly and correctly
- Experience of managing a small team
