A successful librettist, playwright and director on Broadway, Laurents saw his greatest stage successes hit the screen with West Side Story (1961) and Gypsy (1962). He also wrote screenplays including Rope (1948) for Alfred Hitchcock, Anastasia (1956), Bonjour Tristesse (1958), The Way We Were (1973) and The Turning Point (1977).
