James Hawthorne

A former Controller of BBC Northern Ireland, Hawthorne had previously helped establish the Hong Kong television service. His tenure in Belfast between 1978 and 1987 coincided with a rise in IRA activity and government efforts to deprive Republicans 'the oxygen of publicity'. He achieved admirable journalistic balance through it all.
