Forever associated with Jaws (1975) the book - and later film - that made his name, Benchley's other novels included The Deep (1977) and The Island (1979). Fittingly, as grandson of Algonquin regular Robert Benchley, he also appeared in the film that depicted that era, Mrs Parker & The Vicious Circle (1994).
