Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes before one of our world famous awards ceremonies? Well now is your chance to find out.
Photographer Simon Leigh was commissioned to document the construction of the EE British Academy Film Awards set at the Royal Opera House in London. The set design was conceived by Peter Bingemann, who has designed the staging for BAFTA’s Film Awards since 2002. To learn more about the set designing process see; Setting Up.
“The Bafta commission was a dream job for a photographer. I was given a basic outline of what was needed but then given free reign to shoot the project as I felt necessary. My aim was to tell the story of how the BAFTA Film Awards stage set is designed, constructed and finally put into place.
“I was helped in this by everyone I encountered, be they from Bafta, Steel Monkey or the Royal Opera House and by Peter Bingemann, whose stage design prompted the project in the first place.”, says Leigh.
