TOBY JONES: Thank you. Thank you very, very much. I’m deeply honoured. It’s impossible to talk about Detectorists. It’s impossible to talk about Detectorists without talking about the great Mackenzie Crook. He approached me on a film set and said, “Listen, I’ve got this thing. You won’t want to do it. Do you mind if I send it? Send it back. Delete it when you see it. You won’t want to do it, but I have to send it to you because you’re who I thought of when I made the role.”
He rang me just before this and said, “What are you doing tonight?” and I said, “Going to the BAFTAs.” I said, “What are you doing?” He said, “I’m training my robin in the back garden.” He is training his robin in the back garden.
Thank you to Mackenzie. Thank you to everyone involved with the show. All actors say it, but it’s true: you’re only as good as the cast that’s around you and the scripts that get written, fantastic producers at Channel X and Lisa. Thank you BBC Four. And most of all, thank you to Karen, Madeline and Holly, without whom I can’t do my job.
Cheers.
