International sensation Outlander will be honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Television award at the BAFTA Scotland Awards ceremony on Sunday 15 November.
The Outstanding Contribution to Craft award (in memory of Robert McCann) will be presented to Supervising Location Manager Lloret MacKenna Dunn.
Today, BAFTA Scotland has revealed the recipients for this year’s BAFTA Scotland Special Awards, presented to a team or individual in acknowledgment of their outstanding contributions to the screen industries.
The BAFTA Scotland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television will be presented to Outlander. The internationally renowned series produced by Sony Pictures Television, based on the Diana Gabaldon novels of the same name, concluded earlier this year after 12 years and eight seasons. The award will be presented to four individuals who have been instrumental in the show’s impact on the industry and audiences: Ronald D. Moore, who developed the series for television and served as an executive producer; Matthew B. Roberts, who served as showrunner and executive producer; and Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, who starred in the series and served as executive producers.
Outlander premiered in 2014, captivating millions of viewers worldwide with its sweeping, time-traveling story and the enduring romance between Jamie and Claire Fraser. Viewers fell in love not only with Jamie and Claire’s romance, but also with the Scottish heritage and traditions depicted within the series. Research by VisitScotland highlights that Outlander has become one of the most significant drivers of screen tourism in the country, encouraging visitors to explore historic sites, castles, villages and landscapes across Scotland.
Outlander’s success has not only had a lasting influence on Scotland’s outward perception world-wide. The series’ impact on Scotland’s screen industry is undeniable, providing opportunities for local talent to develop and flourish. The Outlander Training Programme, established ahead of Outlander’s first series, has supported more than 170 new entrants through intensive on-the-job training alongside some of the industry’s most experienced technicians. The programme continues with the prequel, Outlander: Blood of my Blood.
Matthew B. Roberts, Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries, Jim Kohlberg, Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan served as executive producers on Outlander, which was produced by Sony Pictures Television.
Matthew B. Roberts said, of being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Television: “When we first landed in Scotland, we were outsiders – sassenachs – strangers in a strange land telling a very Scottish story. What we found was a country that opened its doors and a crew that opened their hearts. They welcomed us, guided us when we needed it, and made us feel like we belonged. That welcome is the real heart of Outlander and Blood of My Blood. And it never ended. Thirteen years on and I don’t feel like a visitor when I step off the plan; I feel like I’m home.”
Ronald D. Moore says: “Since we first came to Scotland many years ago and decided to shoot the show here, it has been a tremendous pleasure to work with our Scottish crew, to utilise the Scottish locations and to learn more about Scottish culture and history and it’s been a huge joy for all of us on the production, especially those of us from North America who perhaps did not know as much about Scotland as we should have but who learned so much down through the years.”
Awarded with the Outstanding Contribution to Craft (in memory of Robert McCann) will be Lloret MacKenna Dunn; a Supervising Location Manager in Scotland’s Film and TV industry who has been bringing Scotland’s hugely diverse locations to the screen for over 30 years.
Her extensive film and television credits include the upcoming Sky series Meantime, The Great Beyond, Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein, The Lost King, T2: Trainspotting, Doctor Finlay and iconic Scottish comedies Only An Excuse? and Rab C Nesbitt.
Lloret is Course Leader in Location Management for NFTS Scotland and is committed to promoting excellence within her field and in the development of skills within our thriving industry. She is also a passionate mentor, providing support and guidance to new and existing members of the location department across the UK.
Lloret said, of being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Craft: “What an unexpected honour, thank you BAFTA Scotland! I feel so proud that the work of the Location department is being recognised and hope that this award will prove an inspiration as the next generation enters our remarkable industry.”
