BAFTA to Host Careers Event for TV New Entrants

19 February 2013

Bookings open for BAFTA TV Forum: Generation Next, which takes place on Friday 10 May

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has today announced that it will host a day-long event on Friday 10 May to support young people and emerging talent to establish a career in television. BAFTA TV Forum: Generation Next will feature interviews, masterclasses, panel discussions and networking with leading TV industry professionals. The day will begin with a discussion with Tim Hincks, President of Endemol, makers of shows such as the BAFTA Award-winning The Million Pound Drop Live and Big Brother, as well as dramas including Ripper Street and the BAFTA-nominated Black Mirror.

The event will address some of the issues identified by the recent BAFTA Career Pathways survey of 16-24 year-olds, which found that talented young people are being discouraged from pursuing a career in television – with those from lower socio-economic backgrounds and women at particular risk of being lost to the industry. The sessions will examine the range of jobs available in broadcasting, the skills required, and how job-seekers can showcase their talents to potential employers.

Anne Morrison, Chair of BAFTA’s Learning and Events committee, said: “Generation Next is a day for anyone who has ever considered a career in TV, whether they are already on the first rung of the ladder, or are still exploring what options might be available to them. We aim to de-mystify the structure of the industry, bust some myths, and also examine the reality of working in this challenging and exciting area. By hearing from, and speaking to, professionals in a variety of roles, we hope that delegates leave armed with greater confidence and a wealth of new contacts.”

Tickets for the BAFTA TV Forum: Generation Next cost £30. BAFTA is also providing 20 free student bursary places (including travel expenses for 10 students living outside of London). To book tickets or apply for a bursary, visit: http.

BAFTA TV Forum: Generation Next has been made possible by the generous support of BAFTA member, screenwriter David Wolstencroft.

Additional material, including exclusive interviews with the speakers, will be published on BAFTA Guru, BAFTA’s online learning channel, after the event.
