A popular make-up artist whose talents were called upon for a variety of productions, Smith was BAFTA-nominated for his work on Gandhi (1982). Over a long career his reputation was built upon films such as Sleuth (1972), The Shining (1980) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), among others.
