A Belfast-born actor who was best known for his role in Z Cars, Ellis starred in over 600 episodes of the show between 1962 and 1978. After beginning his career in theatre, Ellis moved into television in the 1960s and after Z Cars appeared in shows including Doctor Who (1989) and Ballykissangel (1998-1999).
