Louis’ breakthrough project is the film The Incomer.
Inspired by the sheer power of storytelling, Louis has always been compelled by visual narratives – devouring books and remaining constantly energised by exciting new filmmakers.
A childhood of watching endless VHS tapes and ‘lengthy negotiations” with his sister about what to watch, led to an eclectic mix of viewing and a lifelong obsession with film. This, coupled with his Scottish upbringing; growing up in Edinburgh and living ‘everywhere from Glasgow to the Far North’ and his studies at both the Royal Conservatoire and National Film and Television School, have all made him the writer/director he is today.
These influences can be seen in Louis’ breakthrough project; the comedy-fantasy The Incomer which revolves around the lives of two siblings on a remote island in the far north of Scotland. Louis also says family and friends heavily influence his work, so it is hardly surprising that aspects of the project are inspired by his mother’s family heritage in Orkney. While his voice, developed through making dozens of shorts in the form of original heartfelt comedy and genre films, shines through.
In his own words…
“I’ve had to support myself, going wherever the opportunities were as a writer and director. For a long time, those opportunities were in television, so I embraced episodic craft, learning how to move fast and solve problems on set. When those doors shifted, I gravitated back toward feature film, my first love. That winding path taught me resilience and gave me a practical, hands-on understanding of how to get ambitious stories made.”
