(She/Her)

Ella’s breakthrough project is TV show The Other Bennet Sister.

From the age of four, when she first set foot in a kids’ drama club, Ella knew she wanted to become an actor. It was a feeling that was further fuelled by late nights staying up, watching whatever “strange/wonderful film Channel 4 aired in the early hours” on the box TV in her bedroom as a teenager, and cemented when she saw Shane Meadows’ A Room for Romeo Brass.

Now, Ella is living her childhood dream with a lead role in ‘alternative’ period drama and breakthrough project, The Other Bennet Sister. As the actor’s first lead role she has taken on the challenge of exploring the inner world of Mary Bennet, the oft-forgotten middle sister from Pride and Prejudice. She brings the character to life in a story about struggling to find self-acceptance in a world and family that suggest Mary should be anything other than herself. Getting to this point in her career has been a journey that Ella describes as being about “finding the people I vibe with and have similar sensibilities to, and clinging onto them”. This is evident from the fact that her breakthrough role in The Other Bennet Sister came about as a result of having worked with director Jen Sheridan and producer John Pocock on previous projects (Extraordinary and Polite Society).

In her own words…

“I’ve been lucky enough to do both comedy and drama and that has meant I can sort of keep a foot in both camps. And I think, coming from Yorkshire has meant I’ve always leapt at the chance to do more up there too…

“[As well as this] I’ve always been into the hyper-naturalistic and am constantly seeking ways to make things feel more truthful. I am interested in looking for the comic in places where it isn’t obviously found. I love dark/surreal forms of comedy, growing up on The Mighty Boosh, Flight of the Conchords & Nighty Night as my favourite shows, as well as the work of Vic & Bob. I tend to only be heavily drawn to scripts that possess both light and shade and finding that duality really drives me.”
