Chris’ breakthrough project is documentary In The Driving Seat.
As a child, television offered Chris a form of inspiration and escape, with sci-fi classics like Star Trek and Star Wars allowing him to travel to places that his body couldn’t. Now as a filmmaker, and the inventor of the wheelchair-integrated camera system CAERUS, he is inspiring others and sharing his passion for seeing how technology can remove systemic barriers.
Describing his route into the screen industry as unorthodox Chris says he couldn’t take roles the way others could because of his disability and had to carve his own path – tackling barriers through technology along the way. It’s a journey that has shaped him as both a filmmaker and an inventor with “years of hacking technology” to do his job teaching him “to solve problems practically” and leading to the founding of his company Diverse Made Media where he was able to turn those solutions into real products for others to use too.
Now, Chris’ breakthrough project, the documentary In the Driving Seat – which he presented and produced, shows what disabled filmmakers can do when the right tools exist. It sees the filmmaker test-drive the latest mobility technology as a wheelchair user, while self-shooting – something that was only possible because of CAERUS.
In his own words…
“Living with a disability has made me resourceful and resilient, and it means I design for people who are usually overlooked. It has also forged meaningful connections across the industry…
“I’ve always been amazed by the innovation in our industry, from drones like the DJI Inspire 3, where enhanced GPS gives you a 3D dolly with centimetre precision, to tripods that level themselves. These tools are inclusive by nature, making skilled camera work more accessible, yet they also push the boundaries of creativity. That is the thinking behind CAERUS.”
