(She/Her)

Jodie-Simone’s breakthrough project is the TV series Mr Loverman.

Jodie-Simone’s journey into the screen industries was almost accidental, with no set plan to become a costume designer after leaving Middlesex University with a degree in TV Journalism. Although storytelling was always in her blood, it was through dance that the connection was first seeded. She formed her own dance troupe in her teens, making the costumes for the dancers because her grandmother had taught her to sow at a young age.

Feeling unfulfilled working as a TV researcher, she helped a friend with the costumes for an Arts Council-funded show at Sadler’s Wells, which received great feedback. One short course at the London College of Fashion later and costume designer Charmaine Parram was asking her to assist on upcoming projects. Step forward a few years and Jodie-Simone is now heading up the costume department, including on two seasons of Dreaming Whilst Black (2023-2025) and breakthrough project, Mr Loverman (2024). Future work includes Apple TV’s Prodigies and an as-yet-untitled Riz Ahmed project for Amazon. Jodie-Simone is also a founding member of The Black Costume Network, which seeks to diversify the UK costume industry.

In their own words…

“BAFTA Breakthrough is an incredible opportunity. It means a lot, not only to me but also my community, to represent them in a space like this… I’d love to connect with people who are at a similar stage to me and see how we can support each other. You know, who’s to the left of me and who’s on the right? I feel that will benefit me. That’s how you grow… It’s good to grow relationships organically.”
