Eddie Redmayne - Red Carpet Interview, EE British Academy Film Awards in 2016

14 February 2016

Red Carpet Interview: Eddie Redmayne

Interviewer: Zoe Ball

Q.      Eddie Redmayne, congratulations.  Only Rod Steiger and Colin Firth have done it before but tonight you could possibly be the third.  Two in a row, can you do it?

A.      I doubt it very much but I'm thrilled to be invited so it's - no, it's an amazing evening here so I'm so excited to be back.

Q.      How different does it feel to last year?  How were you feeling when you were walking the red carpet last year?

A.      I suppose it all felt pretty new to me last year but there's still an adrenaline buzz and the excitement that comes.  You work on films, it's quite a sort of, you give your everything and you hope that people will enjoy it so when you get to these things, hopefully it means people have gone and seen the films, which is always a good sign.

Q.      I was talking to Tom Hooper and he was talking about how proud he is of yours and Alicia's performances, she's nominated twice.  We have so many questions from you.  This comes from @AkMalisaAli, who says what was the most challenging part of playing Lili for you?

A.      That's a great question. Whilst prepping for the film, I met many trans-women both here in England and in the States and they were very generous at opening their hearts to me and telling their stories and trying to work out what Lili's transition was at a time when there were no predecessors, no vocabulary, no trans community, I suppose that was the most challenging but deeply rewarding side of it.

Q.      Whose performances have you enjoyed most this year in some of the films that you caught?

A.      I loved Leonardo DiCaprio in the Revenant, I thought Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight was breathtaking.  There are so many, where to start?

Q.      It's actually hard to hear because Leonardo DiCaprio has arrived.

A.      That tends to be the case.  He's an amazing guy though.

Q.      Congratulations.  Brilliant acting, yet again.  Enjoy tonight.

A.      Thank you so much.  See you later.
