A man whose appeal transcended his sport, Waddell came to prominence as a darts commentator on the BBC in 1978, joining Sky in 1994. He also created ITV’s Indoor League (1968) later devising and scripting popular children’s series such as The Flaxton Boys (1969-73), Jossy’s Giants (1986) and Sloggers (1994).
