A larger-than-life character, Savile was the first presenter of Top of the Pops (1964) and later became favourite to a whole generation in the wish fulfilment show Jim’ll Fix It (1975-94). An indefatigable charity fundraiser, he was also the public face in a campaign promoting the use of safety belts.
