An actor who turned his back on the vehicle that brought him fame, Roberts was known to millions as the eldest son of rancher Ben Cartwright in Bonanza (1959-1965). Earlier film work includes the western Ride Lonesome (1959) with later success coming in the television series Trapper John MD (1979-86).
