A diligent producer and authoritative character actor, Pollack was best known for his versatile career as a director. His greatest success came with such films as The Way We Were (1973) and Out Of Africa (1985). BAFTA nominations came for Tootsie (1982), Sliding Doors (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003).
