A Hollywood screenwriter who turned his hand to directing, Pierson wrote such films as Cat Ballou (1965), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Anderson Tapes (1971) and Dog Day Afternoon (1975). He directed The Looking Glass War (1969) and A Star Is Born (1976) with later screenplays including Presumed Innocent (1990).
