It was as Madge Allsop, unsmiling foil to Barry Humphries’ self styled ‘housewife superstar’, that Perry became familiar to British television audiences. She made her bow in his chat show The Dame Edna Experience (1987-89), reprising the role in Dame Edna’s Hollywood (1991-93), Dame Edna’s Neighbourhood Watch (1992-93) and others.
