Maloney's directorial work on Dr Who (1968-77) brought a darker flourish to the series and was notable for the introduction of freeze-frame cliffhangers. Producer credits included another cult sci-fi series, Blake's 7 (1978-80), plus The Day of the Triffids (1981) and gritty drama When the Boat Comes In (1981).
