A winner of the Best Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival, Malian Kouyaté was being recognised for his lead performance in London River (2009). He had previously worked with Peter Brook on The Mahabharata (1983), and appeared in films such as Little Senegal (2001) and Dirty Pretty Things (2002).
