A controversial figure, Khrennikov was First Secretary of the Union of Soviet Composers and in this role wielded considerable influence during the Stalin era. A prolific composer himself, he also scored several feature films including The Train Goes East (1949), Dream Of A Cossack (1951) and Ruslan And Ludmila (1972).
