Shohei Imamura
15 September 1926 - 30 May 2006
Director
Idiosyncratic director Imamura found acclaim and controversy in equal measure with Japanese films that won great success internationally. These included a pair of Cannes victories, The Ballad of Narayama (1983) and The Eel (1997). Others include the harrowing post-war tale Black Rain (1989) and Warm Water Under A Bridge (2001).
