As head of religious affairs at the BBC Hunkin was responsible for launching Songs of Praise in 1961, which is still running today. Other programmes he commissioned include the eclectic discussion series Meeting Point (1962), and later produced films for Yorkshire Television including When The Saints Go Marching In (1978).
