A character actor familiar for a string of television roles, Hughes first came to prominence playing Eddie Yates in Coronation Street (1974-83). He followed this with Keeping Up Appearances (1990-95), The Royle Family (1998-2008) and Heartbeat (2001-07). He also doubled Paul McCartney’s voice in the animated feature Yellow Submarine (1968).
