An avuncular American actor, Griffith was closely identified with the role of the warm hearted small town sheriff he played in The Andy Griffith Show (1960-68). Other television work included Matlock (1986-95) with films such as A Face In The Crowd (1957), Hearts of the West (1975) and Waitress (2007).
