Fred Haines

Writer/Director
27 February 1936 to 3 May 2008

A polymath, Oscar-nominated for his debut screenplay for Ulysses (1967), Haines’ achievement was all the more impressive for it being an adaptation of a book previously considered unfilmable. Also active in theatre, his other feature film credits included writing and directing Steppenwolf (1974), from the novel by Herman Hesse.
