Canadian-born Ford's career spanned seven decades, with roles from Rita Hayworth's old flame in Gilda (1946) to the dogged cop in Fritz Lang's The Big Heat (1953) to Clark Kent's adopted father in Superman (1978). His lead performance in comedy western The Sheepman (1958) earned him a BAFTA nomination.
