London-born Ellis began his career as a floor assistant at Thames, was trained on Granada's Director's Course and worked across commercial television and the BBC. But his most enduring success came in American television, directing episodes of such series as Falcon Crest, Knots Landing, Matlock and - more recently - Smallville.
