As an actor, Dixon found fame as one of Hogan’s Heroes (1965-70), having gained experience on stage and in movies including A Raisin In The Sun (1961). Moving behind the camera, he directed episodes of hit shows such as The Waltons (1974-75), Starsky & Hutch (1975) and Magnum P.I. (1982-86).
