A Hollywood star adept at comedy and drama, Curtis was BAFTA nominated for The Defiant Ones (1958), and won further plaudits for his performances in The Sweet Smell of Success (1957), Some Like It Hot (1959), Spartacus (1960), The Boston Strangler (1968) and the ITC produced series The Persuaders! (1971-72).
