Although adept at playing the silly ass Carmichael had an intelligence that also translated into shrewder characters on both stage and screen. Familiar as Bertie Wooster and Lord Peter Wimsey on television his films include Private’s Progress (1956), Lucky Jim (1957), I’m Alright Jack (1959) and School For Scoundrels (1960).
