A British character actor familiar from his work in television, Bate won wider recognition for his appearances in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley’s People (1982). Other television highlights came in Les Miserables (1967), Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977), Game, Set and Match (1988) and War and Rememberance (1988-89).
