From an inauspicious appearance as The Thing From Another World (1951) Arness went on to enjoy considerable success on television. His best known role was as Marshal Matt Dillon in long running western series Gunsmoke (1955-1975), with other shows including How The West Was Won (1977-79) and McLain’s Law (1981-82).
